Newly elected prosecutors are playing a role in the movement to end capital punishment.
Some newly elected prosecutors announced that they would not seek the death penalty in capital cases. Others reformed their internal procedures for review of such cases:
- Prior to assuming office in January, Denver District Attorney Beth McCann announced that the state would not pursue the death penalty during her administration.
- During his campaign, Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner committed to never seek the death penalty.
- Kim Ogg in Harris County, Texas; Melissa Nelson in Florida’s Fourth Judicial District; and Aramis Ayala in Florida’s Ninth Judicial District have all implemented more extensive internal review systems for potential capital cases.
